How to Pronounce Trygve
The love interest in my first novella, Meet Me in the Tower: A Metal Love Story, is named Trygve. It’s a name I’ve always found myself drawn to because it just sounds inherently metal to me.
However, according to the folks over at my new favorite subreddit, r/namenerds, it’s generally perceived as an old man name. There’s a lively discussion within that post about how to pronounce Trygve but, if you don’t feel like clicking any external links, I gotchu.
So, according to that thread, the traditional Norwegian and/or Swedish pronunciation sounds kind of like “TRIG-vuh”, trig as in trigonometry, and…vuh, with an “uh” like the u in “butt”. In areas of the US where this name is common, folks apparently pronounce it more like “TRIG-vee”, with a long i sound at the end instead of an “uh”. Like “tree” with extra steps.
Howtopronounce.com seems pretty legit if you want to hear someone pronounce Trygve. The first sound file has 11 upvotes, so that’s promising. I hate those robotic “how to pronounce” translations that permeate the YouTube sphere, so I usually go to this website instead.
However, dear reader, it seems you’ve come to my website to learn how to pronounce Trygve, so I’m hoping I’ve provided an adequate explanation.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this informative blog post about how to pronounce the name Trygve and that you tell all your friends. I’m an author, by the way. If you’re a reader, you should really check out my books.
